    Show Notes

    Author Interview: Michael Gandy

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Cheryl McNeil Fisher talks with author Michael Gandy about his unique aspect of writing and publishing. His books are serialized internationally, and amazingly, they are free! Each year he sells several of his print books. Every cent of profit is donated to the Talking Book Library Services through the Mississippi Friends of Handicapped Readers.

Michael is an engaging storyteller. He will take you on his journey from childhood to how he became interested in working with the blind. His respect for the people he met made him want to assist and enrich their lives, which inevitably led him to his position as Director of Rehabilitation for the Blind in Mississippi.

After retiring, he began narrating his books in the Mississippi Talking Book Service studio. Michael has written over 100 books. Before the pandemic, he narrated 70 books, so he doesn’t have too much further to go unless he keeps writing more books! Join us for an inspirational and informative interview with Michael Gandy.

Ep 2 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 2

    Show Notes Episode 2

    Character Development Part Two

Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

    Character Arcs
What changes have your characters made during your story?
What will your proposed characters do?

We know from our own lives that people change. As authors, we need to create the twists, surprises and vivid sweeps of transformation which capture readers. Youngsters, teens, young, mid-life, and mature adults all have unique stages, conflicts and opportunities for dramatic or gradual change. What will happen in the unfolding journey of your character? And how will you keep the arc moving?

    Writing and Discussion
1 Select a character arc of someone you’ve read, or you’re developing.

2 Jot down notes about their development and the arc. Timeline, critical events, etc.

    Traits
In your writing, are there character traits you find more or less universal? What do you find is necessary to make them come alive to your reader?
What do you find you need to include? Speech style? Accent? Specific jargon or word choices?
Mannerisms? Behaviors? How they walk, their gait?
characters. Enjoy the discussion and examples.

    Revelation
How do we reveal character traits in our stories? What strategies do you use to weave them into our writing? Examples of techniques include metaphor, flashbacks, a journey, lessons, when they described described by others, etc. Think of your favorite work and consider what our authors suggest.

    TRIVIA
What if you were to play trivia as your character? How many of these questions could you answer? Give them a try.
    What is your character’s?

    • Birth place?
    • Occupation?
    • Biggest secret?

    Favorite or worst

    • Pet
    • Vacation
    • Type of food
    • Neighbor or friend
    • Sport

    • Technology

    Character Development – Part One

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Many different areas to choose from, but one which requires a lot of work, focus, and organization is character development.

    TOOLS:
1- Name generators or purposeful name choice
2- Character tables/charts to Document, organize and guide the development of details of your characters, and keep them straight!!

Have you read books with inconsistencies? For instance, unless your character dyes his Hair: Its color can’t suddenly change colors from scene the scene.

Today, we will use some fun prompts to flesh out a character of your choice.

1- Think about what you would like to write or you have in progress. It might be any genre- fantasy, biography, history, mystery, etc.

2- Next, Identify one of your characters .. write down his or her name. If you don’t already have such a character, choose a name and basic identity. Like, Catherine the engineer, or Sherlock the detective.

3- Who would like to share the name and identity they will work on today?

4- PROMPTS ** Likes, dislikes and why- Describe one thing your character likes and the reason. Then list one thing they dislike and the reason. ** A strength or Extraordinary ability- List and describe one strength or Extraordinary ability of your character. Then briefly name the formative events that led to its development or discovery ** Physical characteristics— Imagine you’re meeting your character for the first time. Write a description of his or her physical characteristics and one mannerism you observe.
