    The Coveted Ball
    09/23/2022

    Midas my golden retriever friend
Loved to explore the woods to no end.

A tennis ball I threw with ease
Beyond a cluster of nearby trees.

Our property backed to a state park
Where my golden friend had many a lark.

With fairy-like agility a squirrel scampered by.
No doubt an acorn had caught his eye.

Then, what I saw, I could not believe.
The tennis ball they both wanted to retrieve.

“Let’s play fetch, Spot,” Jack told his dog. He threw the tennis ball and Spot darted after it.
A squirrel scurried down a tree and scooped up the ball, racing off with it. Spot chased after him.
No, no, no,” said a fairy that swooped down. She whacked the squirrel on the snoot. He dropped the ball. She scooped it up and brought it to Jack.
Spot and Squirrel stared in astonishment.

    Tennis Ball or Nut

“Anna, you can serve better than that.”
“Sorry, Melissa. I just realized I need to get cash after we’re done. I’m playing tooth fairy tonight.”
“Aww! Did Erica finally lose that first tooth?”
    “Yep.”
A squirrel suddenly swooped down, picked up the tennis ball, and scampered away.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake!” Melissa cried.
Anna laughed. “He probably thinks it’s a nut. He’ll learn the hard way.”

    “What is that?”
“Those, Squirrely are the Funky Fairies.”
“They found a tennisball in their tree, covered it
with many colorful treasures, and a set of solar lights to create what Funky calls their, Psychedelic Disco Ball Home.”

The funky fairies flit and dance through the dazzling lights, creating music with their gauzy wings.
Above the music a giggle can be heard from the little girl watching through her window, dancing with her teddy bear.
