    Although a subject of quiet speculation among his closest acquaintances, no one actually knew how he came to be called Rose, and no one had the nerve to ask. The one thing everyone did know is that his past was difficult and dark, and when it caught up with him as he sought to reinvent himself in a sleepy Cleveland suburb, no one, least of all Rose himself, was much surprised.

    A Pet Owner’s Nightmare

    “What if it’s something…terminal?” June’s voice quavered as she blinked rapidly.
    Pale faced husband Henry shook his head rapidly.
    June sighed, then wailed, “Poor Spot! He’s only a ten-month-old puppy.”
    Agonizing minutes later, the elderly veterinarian slowly approached. Wrinkles and lines added to his grim-faced appearance.
    Raising anxious and scared faces, June and Henry held loosely to each other’s forearms.
    The doctor’s voice was gruff. “It’s transmutable…but treatable. Spot has COVID.”
