    Faithful Dog
    (Excerpt)
    by Marlene Mesot

A distinct smell permeates the air.
But humans take no notice without care.
They do not have my keen sense of smell
That alerts me to nature’s tell.

The scent of rain lurks thick in the air.
It will quash the celebration there.
I bark to signal alert to my humans,
But they are too busy with their friends.
Once the rain pours there’s no doubt,
They will scurry for the house.

    Chivalrous Canine
The feeding of the hounds will begin at the hour of three. The commencement of drool, impatient yowls and other displays of poor self-control notwithstanding, the human must not, repeat, must not break the observance or risk the penalty.
. Though yon beasts attend famished eyes toward canine rations, Ye kibble pail shall not be graced with nourishment until ye most holy hour is noted and the beast is released to feast.

    Sleeping Beauty?
The cat knows exactly when it’s time,
to turn out the lights, close her eyes,
and drift right off to that wonderland of dreams!
“Meow!” She calls, right in time with the clock as it strikes 9:30.
    She never misses a beat.
    No time for baths,
    no time for walk,
    no time for games,
    no time for talk!
    The cat knows,
when that hour comes,it’s Sweet dreams,
    hasta manana,
    and good night!

    My Cat Knows
My human is about to have yogurt! First to the fridge, then the drawer.
I patiently wait for her to finish so I can lick the container. We talk to each other the whole time.
