My Life

My name is Twinkle Toes
I am a chocolate brown cat.
My brother’s name is Fancy Pants.
We’ve lived here since we were kittens.
There’s an upstairs and downstairs.
Lots of blankets and cushions, dark places to hide,
sunny windowsills.
Food choices, clean water, a big litter box.
A person at the door,
to let us in and out.
We are slower now,
we stay in more,
Life is Good!

“Mom, Samantha spilled Kool-Aid on the counter,” Nathan said, as I walked into the kitchen on Friday, the 13th.
“I did not! Nathan wanted to see if he could pour Kool-Aid with his right hand, even though he’s left-handed.”
“Nathan, you know what you need to do.”
I pointed to a nearby roll of paper towels.
“Okay, Mom.” Nathan hung his head and looked like he might cry.

We began with a story prompt from different genres each time. We also experimented with different guidelines for the storytelling. Are you ready to laugh? Click play!

Cheryl McNeil Fisher talks with author Michael Gandy about his unique aspect of writing and publishing. His books are serialized internationally, and amazingly, they are free! Each year he sells several of his print books. Every cent of profit is donated to the Talking Book Library Services through the Mississippi Friends of Handicapped Readers.
Michael is an engaging storyteller. He will take you on his journey from childhood to how he became interested in working with the blind. His respect for the people he met made him want to assist and enrich their lives, which inevitably led him to his position as Director of Rehabilitation for the Blind in Mississippi.
After retiring, he began narrating his books in the Mississippi Talking Book Service studio. Michael has written over 100 books. Before the pandemic, he narrated 70 books, so he doesn’t have too much further to go unless he keeps writing more books! Join us for an inspirational and informative interview with Michael Gandy.

Character Arcs
What changes have your characters made during your story?
What will your proposed characters do?
We know from our own lives that people change. As authors, we need to create the twists, surprises and vivid sweeps of transformation which capture readers. Youngsters, teens, young, mid-life, and mature adults all have unique stages, conflicts and opportunities for dramatic or gradual change. What will happen in the unfolding journey of your character? And how will you keep the arc moving?
Writing and Discussion
1 Select a character arc of someone you’ve read, or you’re developing.
2 Jot down notes about their development and the arc. Timeline, critical events, etc.
Traits
In your writing, are there character traits you find more or less universal? What do you find is necessary to make them come alive to your reader?
What do you find you need to include? Speech style? Accent? Specific jargon or word choices?
Mannerisms? Behaviors? How they walk, their gait?
characters. Enjoy the discussion and examples.
Revelation
How do we reveal character traits in our stories? What strategies do you use to weave them into our writing? Examples of techniques include metaphor, flashbacks, a journey, lessons, when they described described by others, etc. Think of your favorite work and consider what our authors suggest.
TRIVIA
What if you were to play trivia as your character? How many of these questions could you answer? Give them a try.
What is your character’s?
Birth place?
Occupation?
Biggest secret?
Favorite or worst
Pet
Vacation
Type of food
Neighbor or friend
Sport
Hairstyle
Technology

Many different areas to choose from, but one which requires a lot of work, focus, and organization is character development.
TOOLS:
1- Name generators or purposeful name choice
2- Character tables/charts to Document, organize and guide the development of details of your characters, and keep them straight!!
Have you read books with inconsistencies? For instance, unless your character dyes his Hair: Its color can’t suddenly change colors from scene the scene.
Today, we will use some fun prompts to flesh out a character of your choice.
1- Think about what you would like to write or you have in progress. It might be any genre- fantasy, biography, history, mystery, etc.
2- Next, Identify one of your characters .. write down his or her name. If you don’t already have such a character, choose a name and basic identity. Like, Catherine the engineer, or Sherlock the detective.
3- Who would like to share the name and identity they will work on today?
4- PROMPTS ** Likes, dislikes and why- Describe one thing your character likes and the reason. Then list one thing they dislike and the reason. ** A strength or Extraordinary ability- List and describe one strength or Extraordinary ability of your character. Then briefly name the formative events that led to its development or discovery ** Physical characteristics— Imagine you’re meeting your character for the first time. Write a description of his or her physical characteristics and one mannerism you observe.

Show Notes Ep 122 : Jim Hartsell, Author interview
**
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King**
We know you will enjoy this entertaining and informative interview with author Jim Hartsell. Jim writes a series of books for adults called the Boone series. He also has a group of books for children. Tune in to hear us discuss a variety of topics including his books, diversity issues, marketing, independent publishing, and the writing craft. We know you will be pleased with this episode.
About Jim Hartsell
Like most of us, there are many descriptors that apply to me: husband, father, grandfather, voracious reader, and average hammer dulcimer player are a few of them. I also write, concentrating on Southern fiction and children’s books.
I have deep roots in East Tennessee; I’ve always lived here, and the farm my sister and I currently own has been in our family for five generations. My immediate family consists of my wife of 43 years, my two children, their spouses, and six grandchildren. My wife and I share our home on House Mountain with a cat and two shelter dogs.
My professional career was in education, working with teens in a variety of settings. The three decades I spent with teens who have been characterized by society as losers at best and dangerous at worst taught me much about resilience, strength, and bravery, and helped form the concept of the main character in the Boone series.
I have a beautiful family, all the necessities of life plus a few luxuries, a fine circle of friends, and time to write books, play music, and enjoy the moments as they present themselves one by one. By any measure that matters to me, I am a very wealthy man.

Show Notes episode 102 Guest author, Peter Abrahams, a.k.a. Spencer Quinn.
**
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King**
In this fast-paced episode, best selling author, Peter Abrahams aka Spencer Quinn is our guest on Writing Works Wonders . Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the author of the chat and Bernie series in addition to many other standalone books. Anyone who can write with a dog as a narrator, is sure to provide a fun and informative interview for readers and writers alike. insights on writing, alternate narration methods, and plenty of creativity and inspiration included in this episode!About Peter Abrahams aka Spencer QuinnAs a boy, I read voraciously, almost anything I could get my hands on, but I enjoyed adventure stories the most. I wasn’t one of those unhappy kids who loses himself in books. I was a pretty happy kid who did it. We had a summer cottage in Quebec. My grandmother would come up on weekends, bringing me a kind of popcorn I liked and a stack of books. There would be famous ones, like Treasure Island, and not-so-famous ones, like Red Pete the Ruthless. I can still recall the last scene of that one – Red Pete, buried up to the neck between the high and low tide lines, surrounded by his stolen gold, waves lapping closer. **
Can’t you just hear the hiss of the bubbles?I was also interested in words themselves. Probably like you, I hated to stop reading if I thought I’d pretty much understood a new word from the context, but some persnickety thing in me usually insisted I look it up. (“Persnickety,” for example, seems to derive from the Scots dialect. Nice to find out I’ve got some Scot in me, probably a surprise to my family.)I began by writing stand-alones, meaning non-series novels – such as Lights Out, The Fan (filmed by Tony Scott, with a cast including Robert De Niro), Oblivion, and End of Story. It was during this period that Stephen King – uh-oh! I just came close to quoting from my own reviews. Wasn’t I brought up better than that?A little later, I also started writing for younger readers, beginning with the Echo Falls series, centered around thirteen-year old Ingrid Levin-Hill. I took advantage of having four kids of my own – all that raw material! – plus the fact that, yes, I’d once been thirteen myself. Speaking of family – the most important thing in my life – my wife and children are the only people who read my books while they’re being written. I put each new chapter on the kitchen table, and any family member so inclined can read, comment, and even revise. No one holds back! The holding back gene didn’t catch on here.
** **
I live on Cape Cod with my wife – all the kids up and grown now – and dogs Audrey and Pearl. Dogs are a big part of our life and there’s no way I could have written Chet and Bernie without them. Audrey and Pearl are the kind of researchers writers dream of, showing up every day and working for treats.(information, copied from the Author website.)Authors website **

Show Notes Episode 98 Guest Author, Margaret Mizushima
**
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King**
What a special treat! An exciting interview with Margaret Mizushima! This accomplished author of the Timber Creek K9 mysteries series brings insight, laughter and encouragement to writers of all levels. Enjoy this episode as readers and writers ask questions and learn about what inspires her and how she has developed her craft of writing over her years of success.
About Margaret Mizushima
Margaret Mizushima is the author of the award-winning and internationally published Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries. Active within the writing community, Margaret serves as past president for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, was elected the 2019 Writer of the Year by Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and is also a member of Northern Colorado Writers, Sisters in Crime, and Women Writing the West. She and her husband recently moved from their home in Colorado to the Pacific Northwest.
Margaret was born in Kansas and grew up on cattle ranches in Texas and Colorado. Her childhood summers were spent either on horseback herding cows or nestled in the crook of a tree reading a library book..
Due to volunteer experiences in high school, she
pursued a degree in Speech Pathology, which she received from Colorado State University after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Northern Colorado.
Later, she married a veterinarian, and they have two daughters. Margaret worked as a speech therapist in an acute care hospital before establishing her own agency.
After she sold her company, she decided to study the art and craft of fiction writing. What a wondrous world this opened up for me.
Margaret says, “Whereas before, I’d been driven by the science of speech, language, and communication disorders, I could now focus on artistic creativity with language. I could also use my years of experience working with people to create characters that readers seemed to enjoy. Since I’m an avid crime fiction reader and crime documentary watcher, mystery writing seemed like the way to go.”
In addition to reading, Margaret enjoys yoga and hiking in the Colorado high country.

Show Notes episode 96, cast author and poet, Victoria Zigler
**
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King**
Zoomng in from Wales, we have a a very special guest author interview, Victoria Zigler. An ACB member, Tori will discuss her many short stories, books, and poetry writing, which span children’s stories, fantasy, science fiction and more. Toi understands the“pesky“ issues of editing or writing work, but she also has experienced loss of sight across her lifetime. Join us as we discuss her work, as well as the approaches and strategies she uses for success.
Based on her exciting life, we know this will be an informative and inspirational event! We look forward to you participating with us and bringing your questions.
About Victoria Zigler “Tori” (information adapted from her website)
Tori says, “I’m a blind vegan poet and children’s author, who was born and raised in the shadow of the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, spent some time living in Alberta, Canada, and Hastings, England, UK – returning to Wales in between.
“Despite spending far too much time in hospital, and eventually losing my sight to Congenital Glaucoma, I’ve been writing since I was old enough to know how, with no plans to stop any time soon. I have a long list of publications to my name, including several poetry collections, **manny children’s stories, a story in the sci-fi and fantasy anthology Wyrd Worlds II, three poems in the Poetry Treasures anthology, and a poem in the Stand Together charity anthology.
“Vegan due to both a love for animals and dairy allergy, as well as an Eclectic Pagan, I would describe myself as a combination of Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter books: Hermione’s thirst for knowledge and love of books, combined with Luna’s wandering mind and alternative way of looking at the world. I have a wide variety of interests, designed to exercise both the creative and logical sides of my brain, which I dabble in at random depending on what I feel like doing at any given time, and am most likely to be found playing with my petkids, involved in calls with the ACB Community, curled up somewhere with a cup of tea and a book, working on some kind of craft project, or trying to keep one step ahead of those pesky typo fairies while writing my own books.”
Tori is now back to living in Wales, along with my Canadian husband, Kelly, and our petkids – a West Highland White Terrier named Lilie, a Cavapoo named Logan, and a Hermann’s Tortoise named Artemis.
Her books are available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and smashwords.

Show Notes Episode 72, Guest Author Interview Amanda Cabot
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King
AMANDA CABOT
Master Author of Inspirational Books/Romance
Enjoy this opportunity to hear Amanda Cabot, the popular author of inspirationa fiction, romance novels, and trilogy series.
Discover insights on writing process and strategies! Wonderful discussion with her readers and encouragement for author. Read below about Amanda‘s diverse background and wonderful humorous perspective on writing and you will know this interview is a delightful experience for our listeners!
• Amanda Cabot’s books are listed as best-sellers in Amazon, Kindle, and as most-read in NLS Talking Books/BARD.
• Amanda is widely acclaimed for her romance trilogy series of which she has published 36. She also writes other freestanding novels.
• A few of Amanda‘s trilogy titles include,
o Cimarron Creek
o Mesquite Springs
o Texas Crossroads
Amanda says,
“At least in my mind, it’s only a small step from being an avid reader to wanting to be an author. From the time I was seven, I was convinced I should be a writer. The type of writing varied with the seasons. For a few months I fancied myself a playwright. Fortunately the teachers in my elementary school indulged me, and my class produced my two plays: “All About Thermometers” and “Hawaii.” Neither, I am happy to report, made its way to Broadway.
When I graduated from college, I took a “temporary” job as a computer programmer. Although it hadn’t been part of my plan, that turned into a permanent career in Information Technology.
Along the way, I’ve had a chance to do a lot of writing, including four technical books and what I describe as “enough technical articles to cure insomnia in a medium-sized city.” (My budgets were also considered to be works of fiction.) Now, though, I’m able to write full time, and for the first time, all I’m writing is fiction.
When people ask why I write, the answer is simple: it’s part of who I am and who I was meant to be.”

About Seamus King
An author of fantasy fiction, Seamus King has published six books, and edited innumerable publications. He is co-founder of Jazz House Publications and founder/lead editor of Better Words Editing Services. He started his formal editing training as a research assistant and editing nonfiction articles, expanding to books and then editing and publishing fiction. He also does web design.
Seamus says he has been fighting dragons and foul knights in his dreams and imagination since before he can remember. He grew up on Tolkien, Alexander and Lewis, and will always be grateful for them opening the doors to faraway places in his mind.
In his spare time, Seamus enjoys the Society for Creative Anachronism SCA, as well as honoring the ancient and time-honored tradition of MUSHing (Text-based roleplaying games).
He grew up in northern New England, Pennsylvania and Georgia, and now lives in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Tennessee with his wife and daughter

Show Notes, Episode 35, Mur Lafferty & Science Fiction
**
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King**
Why would an author lock up her Switch gaming station? What is fanfiction? Where do we access free original sci fi podcast magazines? And which publications purchase short stories from authors? Mur Lafferty, our first guest author of Science Fiction and Fantasy, answers these questions, and offers keen insight into these worlds and genres. We learn about free science fiction and other original works available in podcast format by our guest, and through EscapeArtists.net. She also clues us into the backstory of her Star Wars books, short stories, novels, serials, and podcasts! An award-winning author, writer and podcaster, you will enjoy learning about her work, writing tricks, and perspective! So, (in the style of EscapePod introductions…) put on you magical glasses, it’s interview time!”
About Mur Lafferty
Mur is an accomplished author, editor and podcaster. She earned a degree in English from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MFA from the University of Maine’s Stonecoast Popular Fiction Program. She currently lives in Durham, NC. She is an innovator and dynamic creative energy in science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction and encouraging geeks and writers to embrace their identities and potential.
Her published works and awards are numerous. As of 2021, here is a brief summary of works: seven novels, six novellas, two anthologies, several short fiction works, serial works and co-editor of the science fiction magazine, EscapePod. In addition, we can’t begin to sort out how many podcasts she has contributed to and/or launched. She has been hosting “I Should Be Writing” for many years.
In 2015, Mur Lafferty was inducted into the Podcast Academy Hall of Fame. She has been awarded The Astounding Award for Best New Writer (previously known as the John W. Campbell Award). And very notably, her novel “Six Wakes” was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards.
