The house was too dark and silent. I didn’t leave it this way.
I thought I heard something. Maybe it was a cat. Maybe it was an axe murderer. I wasn’t taking any chances. I backed out of the house and closed the door behind me. As I made my way down the path. I took out my cell phone and called 911. I stayed in my car until the police arrived.

He picked up a wrench and cat-footed up the porch and eased the door open wider. He clicked the switch and saw something dangling from the light fixture. He saw that it was his own shirt and slacks stuffed with towels and attached to a noose. He could deal with soaped windows but this was carrying Halloween pranks a bit too far.

Thump!
I jerked my hand back from the light switch.
Creak!
I backed up to the door that wasn’t locked. I shivered.
A tick like clattering sound seemed to move down the stairs toward me.
A gnawing ache began in my stomach. My throat was parched.
Growling!
No weapon!
Gathering courage, I flicked the light switch!
Woof! Pant! Thwack!
I hugged my big, wiggling guard dog, relieved.
But who unlocked the door?
