Slam. Slide.
Who will win?

When the wind is fierce
where do the Cardinals go
and how do they know ?

Are Blue Jays there too
do they huddle together
the red and the blue ?

Or are Cardinals
and Blue Jays, each on their own
hiding from the wind.

The phenomenon of light scattering is An artifice
Filtering and fooling the eye
Muting the spectrum except for blue

A crushed cardinal feather
Is red through and through.
But the wind cannot be fooled.

“My nest is nicest,” Whistled Cardinal. “It’s strong and attractive.”
“Not so,” grated Bluejay. “Mine is better.”
Wind thought, “Those birds are arrogant. They need to be taken down a peg.” So he blew with all his might and in the morning both nests lay
on the ground.

The wind blows.
I can feel it on my face.
The leaves rattle.
They sound so noisy.
The branches sway.
I’m sure they’re going to drop off.
I sit on my bench and watch it all.
I can hear a blue jay singing in the tree.
I’m worried it might fall off its limb.
But look, there’s another bird.
It’s red and taking flight.
It’s a cardinal.
The sign of freedom.

“Why this sacrifice?” Wind queried whisperingly.
Cardinal answered immediately. “I willingly do this because I love them.”
Blue Jay agreed. “I understand, my Son.”
Wind spoke confidently. “Then I am with you always, selflessly.”
Looking at Blue Jay Cardinal replied, “I must do the will of my Father.”
Wind hissed, “Will they understand?”
